Description
The product of GEMS SO2 is SO2 VCD. SO2 VCD represents the total SO2 concentration from surface to top of atmosphere above the unit area. Anthropogenic factors such as combustion of fossil fuel and metal melting and natural factors such as volcano eruption is main sources of SO2. A large amount of SO2 in atmosphere is adversely effects on human bronchi such as bronchitis and pneumonia. SO2 is also converts to aerosol such as sulphate, which affect air pollution, the global climate system, atmospheric circulation, acid rain, and acidification of lakes.
Applications
The SO2 products of GEMS can be used for volcanic activity monitoring and impact assessment. in addition, it can be used to study the local and regional short-term climate change impact.
when SO2 VCD has low value under 1 DU and there is a lot of cloud, the uncertainty of retrieval accuracy can be increased.
