NO2 and Gridded Data (L3)

NO2 and Gridded Data (L3)

Description

The main products of GEMS nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is tropospheric VCD, stratospheric NO2 VCD. The NO2 VCD represents the total NO2 concentration from surface to top of atmosphere above the unit area. The main sources of NO2 is fossil fuel combustion such as vehicle and thermal power plant. A large amount of NO2 in atmosphere is adversely effects on human health such as respiratory infections and symptoms and major precursor of tropospheric ozone.

Applications

The NO2 products of GEMS will be used to comparative data for improving of atmospheric model data and can be used air quality management and policy establishment with other pollutant data. It is also can be used as research data on the regional transport of NO2 and the impact of climate change.

Note: data interpretation

It is important to considering the accuracy of air mass factor and preceding products such as cloud, aerosol, ozone, surface reflectance, etc. since the accuracy of preceding products affected on NO2 retrieval accuracy.

(L3-NO2 gridded data)
GEMS gridded mean NO2 (Level 3) is calculated as a daily and monthly average for both column and troposphere with the spatial resolution of 5 km over the Korean Peninsula and about 10km over the rest. Daily average is available on the following day upon completion of the daily data processing and monthly average is on the following day of the end of the month.
Cloud pixels are removed when processing gridded mean NO2.
The accuracy of the mean concentrations may vary depending on the effect of cloud pixel removal and the number of observation.
